Two years before my father died, we began talking. We spoke about his childhood in Indonesia and his experience as a prisoner of war. He had not yet received his diagnosis of lung cancer. If I’d known his terminal illness was already stalking us, as it must’ve been by then, would this have changed the shape of our conversations?
